Biometrical graphics

In this month’s ‘Grafik‘ magazine, there is a great article to show how digital design is pushing technology and developing new types of user interaction.
ICO design created a biometric installation at “The Wellcome Collection” in London. It takes biometrical data - fingerprints, iris scan, heart rate, height and age - to generate a unique personal ‘bio identity’.
The individual identity can then be emailed to the user and used for anything from a phone screen saver to being applied on a t-shirt, or can even be mapped as a tattoo on Second Life.
For me, this was a great reminder of the different types of technology available and emphasised how important it is that designers keep pushing the development of technology, allowing designers to communicate using the most suitable media.
The level of user interaction in this project has got to be one of the best examples in its field that I have seen. Allowing the user to become the product of the design gives it added meaning and will give the message more value to its audience.
