What’s On?

Now that the sun has got his hat back on, it seems like the perfect opportunity to get out and about and visit the spectrum of art and design exhibitions this summer.
The Design Museum is showcasing the work of Richard Rogers and Architects until 25 August. If that whets your appetite pop along to the South Bank Centre and visit the Pyscho Buildings exhibition. An exhibition marking The Hayward’s 40th anniversary as one of the world’s most architecturally unique exhibition venues. Not your bag? Why not visit the V&A which is currently showing the spectacular China Design Now exhibition - a feast of urban culture and astonishing fashions. The jewel in the capital’s crown has to be the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition. The exhibition is the largest open contemporary art exhibition in the world, drawing together a wide range of new work by both established and unknown living artists. Now in its 240th year, the exhibition includes around 1,200 works and the majority of works are for sale.
For us budding art goers in the East Midlands though, there doesn’t seem much on offer (please tell me otherwise, but I can find very little). Change is imminent however, with a number of art centres opening in the forthcoming months, including Nottingham Contemporary, the New Art Exchange (Hyson Green, Nottingham) and the Curve (Leicester). My top tip this summer would be a roadtrip up the M1 to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park - an art fan or not, it’s a great day for all the family.
