David Mellor
I was really sorry to hear that one of the key figures in British Design had passed away.
David Mellor was not only famous for his stainless steel cutlery designs, but for his simple and iconic designs which are still in use today – including the traffic light system, bus shelters and the square-edged pillar-box.
He strongly believed that a designer’s role was to control the creation of a new product from concept through to customer.
His purpose-designed factory in the Peak District National Park and shops on Sloane Square, London and at Hathersage in Derbyshire are well worth a visit to appreciate his skills as a craftsman and artist.
