Big Art

Posted in Inspired by Michelle on June 9th, 2009

Public art can transform spaces. When a community rolls up its sleeves and helps to make it all happen, it’s even more powerful stuff, helping to bring people together and breathe new life into the places where they live, work and play.

Back in 2005, Channel 4 asked the nation to get involved with creating unique works of public art within our communities.

Seven sites were picked based on criteria including planning and political support, aesthetic and educational potential, through to the enthusiasm of the nominating community – including Burnley and St.Helens.

All seven projects have flourished, with unique partnerships being formed between art experts and communities. For the inspiring and surprising creations, go to the Channel 4 website.

You’ll see the invisible art created with Burnley teenagers that comes to life only when lit from an ultraviolet source and the 20 metre-high sculpture called Dream – a girl’s head coming out of the old colliery site in St.Helens, which was inspired and championed by the ex miners.
